The purpose of this course is to give knowledge which is required in order to take the best advantage of the various spectral techniques applied to investigation of the bulk and surface structure of different silicate materials such as glasses, crystalline products, glass-ceramics, ceramics. The spectral methods give an information on the dynamic picture of the material structure investigated. The main structural results obtained are correlated to the chemical bonding, coordination and oxidation state of the participating species in the silicate structure. In this connection the application of UV-VIS spectroscopy, IR-spectroscopy, ESR, NMR, Mossbauer spectroscopy, XPS and AES. is presented.
